ITESHU Researchers Recognized in Technociencia Superior 2025
Pachuca, Hidalgo, November 17, 2025 – Researchers from the Higher Technological Institute of Huichapan (ITESHU) have developed a research project demonstrating that arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi increase the productivity and quality of «Sangre de Toro» red maize. This project offers a sustainable alternative to chemical fertilizers and promotes more sustainable agricultural practices.
The research, led by Dr. Yessica Abigail Alvarado Cepeda during her postdoctoral stay, under the guidance of Dr. Jorge Luis Vega Chávez, with the participation of students Gustavo Cruz García, María Guadalupe Rodríguez López, and María Andrea Trejo Matías, secured the second place at the Seventh Research and Science Day «Technociencia Superior 2025», organized by the National Technological Institute of Mexico / Higher Technological Institute of Rioverde. This highlights the importance of applied research and innovation in the agricultural and social development of the region.
The researchers applied a consortium of mycorrhizal fungi (Rhizophagus sp., Funneliformis sp., Claroideoglomus sp., and Gigaspora sp.) to maize seeds before planting. The results showed better vegetative development, increased cob diameter, and higher grain weight compared to conventional crops.
This advancement not only promotes sustainable agricultural production but also contributes to preserving the cultural value of «Sangre de Toro» red maize, a native variety. This reinforces food sovereignty and the biocultural heritage of the region.
